High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) is a proprietary video and audio interface. To unlock higher resolution potential on 8K TVs, new graphics features on the Xbox Series X and the PS5, and more, the latest HDMI standard is used.
On 2021 TVs (and some 2020s) HDMI 2.1 is available including Sony, Samsung, LG, and more. It's also on game consoles considered “next generation”: i.e., Xbox Series X and PlayStation5. So, should you run to the store and quickly purchase a brand-new television? Do you even need to make sure that HDMI 2.1 capability is on your next television? If a TV lacks HDMI 2.1, new game consoles will still function properly and look good. The new conductivity standard is supported by numerous higher end, mid-range sets. However, it's good to understand the whole concept if you happen to be in the market for a new television.
Note: On Samsung, LG, Sony TVs, and more, Inputs with HDMI 2.1 cater primarily to gamers at this point in time.
Notable Factors Pertaining to HDMI 2.1
- At least one HDMI 2.1 input is available on many new TVs.
- For higher frame rates and/or higher resolutions, new cables are required.
- HDMI 2.1 can carry 120 frames per second (frame rate) and can carry resolutions to 10K.
- Bandwidth is improved to 48 GB (with the HDMI 2.1) from the former 18 GB per second (with the HDMI 2.0).
- Compared to today's HDMI, the physical cables and connectors look the same.
Right now, the HDMI 2.1 can be taken advantage of mainly by these sources:
- RTX 3080
- Nvidia GeForce RTX 3090
- Xbox Series X
- PlayStation 5
Frame Rate Possibilities and Increased Resolution
Technological advances are occurring every day! We live in a time only imagined by even the most progressive minds of yesteryear. Futurists dream about frame rate possibilities like these, as well as the increased resolution available through HDMI 2.1.
Check these out:
- 10K 100/120
- 10K 50/60
- 8K 100/120
- HK 50/60
- 5K 100/120
- 5K 50/60
- 4K 100/120
- 4K 50/60
HDMI 2.1 supports 16 bits per color and BT.2020 on the color font. This is what makes a wide color gamut possible and is the same as HDMI 2.0a/b.
You should get a basic 8K/30, and be able to get 4K/60, with current cables. An Ultra High Speed HDMI cable will be needed for the rest, however.
Stock Up!
If you are a serious gamer, are into computers, own a brand-new TV, etc. – or plan on switching over to high tech options in the near future – you would be wise to have several HDMI 2.1 cables on hand. If you don't need one, chances are, your friend will. With several within easy access, you can be a hero when you come to the rescue with one of your new HDMI 2.1 cables.
